I am taking on a different approach in creating tiles. I have been wanting to create various sizes in tiles and glaze them in crystalline glazes, of course! I want to create tiles that can be used for detailing in a kitchen back-splash, or to be used in bathroom tiling. Something that people could just pick out the size and color to make their tiling really “pop”. It would be such an interesting and unique display to have a few crystalline tiles added to a back-splash or bathroom! But what if you could have them in your furniture? Gasp!
Aside from my excitement to head back home to Maryland for a long weekend this week, I am eager to talk “shop” with my dad on this idea. We are in the planning and design stages of combining our artistic talents and creating a product line we want to explore. My dad is wanting, more and more, to pursue fine woodworking and furniture design. He is very handy and creative. If you know my dad, then I am sure you have seen his cedar strip canoe. If not, you need to! He built it from scratch and it is absolutely beautiful, and yes, we have taken it out on the river many times! With that being said, he is a great woodworker and I would love to see him create more woodwork and furniture. When I am home, we are going to get out our sketchbooks and collaborate on some work. I want to come up with a really neat line of furniture that inlays my crystalline tiles and shows off his craftmanship in woodwork. I want us to set a goal: in one year we will have created at least one piece of furniture with our combined mediums. Can’t wait to be home on Thursday! If you see my dad, ask him about his furniture dreams and encourage him to go for it! He is quite talented!
