Designing

The other day when I was working on the candlesticks, Anna suggested that I could post some images of my preliminary sketches and design ideas.  I thought that was a great idea and a neat way for people to see how I plan out my work.  So, here are some of the sketches I worked on in planning the throwing for the candlesticks.

Candlestick sketch for the mantel

Sketching is one of my favorite phases in starting new work.  First of all, I love drawing and when I start sketching for my next throwing project, something unleashes and I can’t stop.  I make at least a half-dozen different sketches for my next piece of work and then I get lost in my sketch book coming up with all sorts of different things I want to try to explore:  a different way to trim a bowl, a different texture I could incorporate here, a new way to apply glaze and how I want it to flow, a new silhouette I want to give a shot, etc.  It is one of the best ways to get my creative juices flowing.
