By that I mean, I am now working under the staircase! That is right my wheel is right under the stairs in the basement! This decision was made due to “winterizing” my studio. Right after Thanksgiving, I decided to have a day of work in the studio and get a lot of throwing done, as well as, finish my second batch of lanterns. I sat down to throw and within an hour and a half I was in tears from how cold my hands were! I was actually starting to lose dexterity in my hands and fingers! I was freezing and my warm water was quickly turning very cold. My kiln was reading 36 decrees! Not good. My work has been on a hiatus while I tried to work out a plan to “winterize” my studio.
The Bartell’s very graciously offered for me to move my wheel and shelf down to their basement for the winter. When I went down there to see where a good spot might be I happened to look at the stairs and quickly surveyed the space below. I thought that is the perfect spot! My wheel will fit in there just right and I will be out of the way under there. So, as you can see here, it worked out quite well. A black tarp was hung up around the wheel and on the floor to catch any clay splatter coming off of the wheel. I am so grateful for a warmer spot to work. I was feeling pretty discouraged thinking that I would have to take a break for the winter. I am so glad I don’t have to do that and back track – I have done a lot to get to this point!
Unfortunately, due to the freezing weather, the lanterns I was working on all froze out in the garage. Since they were not fully dried, the moisture in the clay was freezing and thawing which created tons of cracks in the pieces. When I brought them inside to let them thaw and try to salvage them, they literally fell apart! Another heartbreak that is just part of doing art, I guess. I will be starting them over after the new year. I don’t have the time now to jump back into that project. Until then I have plenty of smaller things to be working on and catching up on. My blog is one and posting new things on Etsy is another.
