Tiled Mirror Number 2

Wow!  Have I really not blogged in two weeks?  I have certainly lived up to the idea of a “Christmas Break” and, I must say, it has been wonderful!  As a good break should go, you want to feel refreshed and rejuvenated at the end and ready to get back to work and that is exactly how I feel.  I am excited to get back on the wheel and start pumping out new work and some new ideas.  I have several new pieces posted on etsy and a new mirror as well.  You can check those things out here.

Tiles setting in a natural colored grout

Using my crystalline tiles, my dad built another frame and set the tiles around a square mirror.  Instead of using a beveled mirror, a flat edged mirror was used and an inner border was built around the square mirror.  Just like the last mirror that we collaborated on, we used the scraps of our materials to make these mirrors.  It has been fun to see all the different ways we can be resourceful in our work and our mirrors have been a great series of work to get started in.

Tiles set within frame - ready for the grout

The mirror is framed in walnut (interior) and oak (exterior) with golden oak stain, polyurethane and wax finish.  It measures 19 inches square.  The tiles are glazed in rutile and cobalt crystalline glazes.  Each mirror is custom-built with different species of wood.  I will be mixing some new glazes soon and am excited to try them out on my tiles for more mirrors to come.
