As my belly keeps growing and these weeks keep drifting by (5 to go), I have been enjoying getting our little apartment ready for the baby. I have had so many ideas of how I want to decorate and what kind of projects I want to do with our little space. Some of those ideas have now spread to my studio. How about an owl “piggy” bank for our little one?
My inspiration for this fun little piece came from a birthday card I received this year. I am really in to owls…our “nursery” is a woodland owl theme. I have sort of made it up myself, (as in nothing store bought like, bedding) so it is pretty unique. I love when babies have their own little piggy banks. It is a great reminder to be saving, saving, saving for this little one’s future! (A daunting task for our tight budget!) Anyways, I got started with this project in the studio and I am really excited about it! I can’t wait to glaze it and put it on a shelf in our home.
This is the basic shape of the bank. It stands about 10 inches tall; so a pretty good size. The second image is a picture of the bottom of the bank. The hole cut-out is the right size for a rubber or cork plug to keep the money in! The back side of the bank has a slot cut out for the money to be dropped inside.
I then rolled out and cut clay for the owl details to attach to the bank body. I was debating for a while whether or not to do it this way, but I am glad I did.
That’s the owl bank. I am so happy with the way it turned out. I think I need to start making these regularly. I am thinking about how I want to glaze this little guy, until then, he is drying out and getting ready to be bisque fired.
