I am now an official juried member of the League of NH Craftsmen! This is a great honor and an exciting new career step for me as an artist. The League of NH Craftsmen is a rather prestigious group of artisans to be a member of and was founded in 1932. Here is a little overview about the League:
“The League of NH Craftsmen was founded in 1932 to help local artisans during the Great Depression. Today, the League continues to provide public benefits including craft educational programs, scholarships, and grants, plus marketing venus and events for its juried members that promote the quality and value of fine craft. Currently, 800 craft artists have earned juried membership by meeting the League’s rigorous standards for craft making excellence. These artists exhibit master level technique and design in baskets, calligraphy, clay, fiber, glass, leather, metal, mixed media, non-metal jewelry, paper, photography, polymer clay, printmaking, and wood.”
I first juried for the League back in May of 2010. The only pieces I had to offer where those I had done in college for my senior show. At my jury, my work was critiqued by 3 well-standing juried members both openly before me as well as in private before their decision was made. I was told then that I was not accepted or denied, but given a deferral. This meant that I showed a lot of potential, but my work was not up to par to be a juried member of the League. I was given a great list of things and techniques to work on and encouraged to come back again in a year for another jury.
Well, over the course of a year a lot happened as well as getting pregnant with our son Noah and one year quickly turned into four! I kept working towards improvement and mastery with my sights on the League, eventually. I have done two trunk shows of my own down in Maryland, built up my website, built up my shop on Etsy, have participated in an international art competition, as well as a few local craft shows since 2010. I finally was feeling the pull to try again for juried membership with the League a few months ago. All the pieces set in place rather quickly and my second clay jury was this past Friday. It was a really exciting time and I am thrilled to announce I am now a juried member of the League of NH Craftsmen! I will be sharing more about my clay jury along with some images of my work I showed later this week. If you would like to learn more about the League you can visit their website: www.nhcrafts.org.
